Up here in the north country, we’ve had a few years of deep snow and harder winters, and it’s cut our local deer population down a lot. Last year was a much easier winter on them, and I’ve seen more deer around than in several years. I mostly still hunt, solo, in huge, completely un pressured mixed forest, where the deer die of old age or predation. I’m literally the only person that hunts this area I’m in ( probably several thousand acres). Well this morning I was able to sneak up on my best one to date. He was bedded down with a doe, and I got to within 30 yds of him before he even noticed me. Hit him once with the trusty 30-30 while he was getting up, then tracked him about a mile to the other side of a huge bog marsh. After a canoe ride across a lake and a three hour drag, he’s hanging in the shed to make some fresh steaks next week! With work and other things going on, it’s been a couple years since I’ve been able to get some fresh venison, and this guy will provide quite a bit, as he’s easily over 200lbs.
