Is this story true, or does it need some translation?
Is it a 'story' or an account? There's a difference. An eye witness account no less.
"This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word." Isaiah 66:2b
True humility---do we bow down in humbleness to the authority of God's word?
Put another way; Is Scripture subject to man's reason OR Does man's reason serve under Scripture?
(magisterial vs ministerial use of reason)---Which is the slave and which is the master? Hint: man's reason is tainted by sin.
What does the eye witness account of Babel in Scripture say?
If we doubt the historical accounts in Scripture, then what about the historical accounts of Jesus? Did He really live? Did He change water into wine? (that's impossible) The best one yet, did He really live a perfect life for me and die for me? Without the shedding of blood there can be no forgiveness of sins.

In Scriptural matters: Reason is a wonderful servant and a lousy master.

GOD was very specific when He said after the flood subsided to go out through out the earth and replantish it. However, against the will of GOD, the descendants of Noah were planning otherwise, hence, GOD in His great mercy decided to correct their plans. GOD's plan worked best after all.
Man makes plans, and GOD has to correct them ( after a good laugh)
Was the cave man before or after Noah?

Speaking of discrediting Jesus.....
Whether or not Noah and his family had to temporarily live in caves is very possible, yet it would not make them 'cavepeople' any more than anyone living in a cave today.
Yes, Jesus human genealogy would be correct according Matt 1 : 1, with the excepting that the harlots and Moabites were left out.
So, were any of these guys a neanderthal?
