Running motor out of water question

    Serial Number: 2B596602
    Mercury 175XLPXS

My 175 Pro XS has the low water pick-ups on the nose of the lower unit. I tried running the motor in my driveway on standard earmuffs, mounted on the side intakes, but water came pouring out of the low water intakes. This led me to temporarily block-off the lower intakes with Gorilla tape, which didn't last long.

What is correct procedure for running my outboard out of the water?

Get a tub & no problem. Their is a past post that Mr Don showed with the correct tub

Keep the water running so everything will stay cool while engine is running

I saw this “Sticky” that shows running the motor with the lower unit in a plastic tub. My lower unit has 6 inlets on each side and my motor is a V6, plus muffs work just fine. My worry is the amount of water coming out of the low water pick-ups when using muffs.

V8-Torquemaster with only 3 inlets on each side

I always have and still do every time, use good fitting muffs as I run in salt water. I use 2 small pieces of rubber hose and plug the nose holes. You can actually buy a cover to block the nose holes, looks like a small bra cup. I also run salt a way through the engine and have never had any issues with it getting too warm.

Obtain the correct Mercury or Quicksilver Low Water Pickup Cover (aka: "bra"). Covers the low water inlets to limit water leakage at that point.

Immersing the lower unit completely in water is the BEST method, however.
