    Mixing lubricants

I want to put something on a non-threaded kingpin seat post to make it easier to put in and remove. Two things that I have on hand to use are powder graphite and liquid silicone.

I want to try the silicone first because I don't think it will be as messy. If I am not happy with that will the graphite still do the job putting it on top of the silicone or would I need to make sure I got rid of all residue first?

I would not want to use the graphite. The graphite residue will make a mess of your carpet.
I think a light coat of grease will work better.

This boat has HydroTurf instead of carpet but the graphite would be messy just handling the post and seat. I was thinking about the silicone because it is clear. The other thing I can use is sewing machine oil.

Break out some sandpaper and/or steel wool and smooth those surfaces before using any lube. If there is any way to clean the inside where the post goes into the mounting hole you need to do that as well. I once had to use a small dowel rod and duct taped steel wool to it and ran it in and out a bunch of times. It was a hillbilly fix but worked great!

I wouldn't use anything other than wax, silicone or teflon around carpet

If you use graphite mix it with alcohol and apply with a brush. Mostly stays where you put it.

Thanks for the tips. These parts are new so dirt is not currently an issue. I think I am going to try silicone on the nylon bushing, and steel wool/polishing/waxing the kingpin. If that doesn't work as well as I would like I'll try some of the other ideas.

Anything with petroleum will swell the plastic/Delrin busing. Take a 3/4 inch bit and clean out the hole the lube with plumbers grease which is 100% silicon. Any hardware store will know what this is.

I already have this and it is what I was planning to use.

That will lube it, my only concern is liquids don't seem to stay put especially on vertical surfaces. A small tin of plumbers grease goes a long way and might be $2.00. I keep a tin in the boat.

I guess you need to be careful of what you get. Home Depot has this which is obviously silicone.

They also have this which says it has a combination of lithium soaps, refined base stocks and additives.

These parts are new so dirt is not currently an issue.
I know this will sound counterintuitive, but the insert is too smooth.

Take a 3/8' dowel rod, cut a slit in the end and insert a piece of sandpaper or emery cloth and and use a drill to spin it inside the bushing to really rough it up.

The sticking will be diminished or gone.

Any lubricant will attract dirt and become a PIA.

    My 2 cent solution.

    Good luck
