    Erie/Detroit River

I'm thinking of heading up to Erie/Detroit River area this weekend and was hoping for some advice seeing as this will be my first trip. I have a 17' Starcraft deep v with an Evinrude 60hp.
I was looking at using the ramp at the Metropark and venturing out from there.
I'm seeing the wind forecast at 7-10 mph out of NNE. Thinking there may be a bit of protection in the area. Not sure what kind of kick up the main lake gets from that kind of wind. Doesn't seem too outrageous to me. Maybe even get out to the islands if not too bad.
I'm wondering if shad move up into the river shallow areas in the fall. I've seen some videos showing they do.
If anyone has any info on conditions or advice, I'd certainly appreciate anything you're willing to share.
Also, is that a safe area to launch and/or stay overnight?
    Thanks

Not so sure I trust that 7 to 10 mph NNE forecast. I have a feeling it's going to be stronger.

I'm using a wind surfing app that looks pretty good. But, yeah, how good is anything at predicting the wind accurately.
Wouldn't that area still provide some protection?

The Lake Erie mouth of the DR is pretty wide. If there’s a significant amount of east in the wind, it still can get very choppy where you come out of the river. There’s no way I’d go out to the islands in those cold temperatures and with any wind to speak of. Not to mention that there’s nobody out there offshore this time of year if you have a problem.

You could go out of Elizabeth Park. That ramp is in the river on the Trenton Channel . That way you won't be exposed to Lake Erie to get to the Detroit River. Still, if this is your first trip and you are going after smallmouth it could be tough finding bass . If you find them it would be fun, but it will be a challenge. Hire a guide your first time out and you will have a good time.
