HELP !!! Garmin Side Vu picture

Hello, I need help I have a stupid question about the Garmin Side Vu screen picture. I understand that the line running down the center of the picture on the screen is the boat,I’m wondering what the dark area on each side of that line is. If it’s the bottom why can’t I see images of objects that are directly under the boat ? Why is that black area included on the number scale that tells you how far out objects are from the boat ? ie, If the black area is 20 feet wide on the scale are the first images of objects 30 feet from the boat?
This is my first time trying to use side imaging sonar and as you can see I’m pretty confused . I think I’ve watched every YouTube video on the subject that I can find and still don’t understand. Thanks, Billy

Here’s an old hummingbird video that does a great job of explaining side imaging. You can apply it to all brands of electronics.
