    predrill holes?

    Replacing bunks so how big of holes should i predrill for 3/8" hot dip galvanized lag screws? Thanks

    The standard is 1/4” in hardwood, 15/64” in medium and 11/64” in softwood.

    But I like a countersunk carriage bolt better. The wet and dry cycle with the bunks makes the lags work loose over time.

    A Forsner bit makes a nice recessed place for a carriage head or stainless bolt head (if you can afford stainless).

    Bill thanks, but I’m going with 1&1/4 “ x 3/8 “
    galvanized lag screws from underneath like what’s in it. Been there for 17 years & still tight.
