The boat is a 2000 it has a 40HP mercury force engine. the last time on the water the RPM's was reading high. I did what was necessary to keep it around 3000 rpm's I know the gauge is old. What brand would be a good suitable replacement.

Terraflex is the factory brand on mine but it is off by a couple hundred rpm. Why did you want to keep it around 3000? It is best to run an outboard at maximum recommended RPM.
Thanks for the reply, I went fishing and was looking at my Helix 7 and the speed was around 30MPH and the RPM gauge was reading 7000 RPM's I knew that was incorrect so I throttled it down, until I could find out what was the cause. Today I went to see if it was A 7000 0r 8000 RPM gauge and the needle is reading 2600 RPM with no battery. So its safe to say the gauge is bad.
Gauge should zero when you turn ignition to 'on' position.
Hook up the muffs and check idle rpm.

Having issues with mine too can't figure out if the tach is off or boat needs to go to the shop. Only turning 5,000 and the prop guy keeps telling me that can't be right with the 17p junk prop BPS put on it.
