    2005 521vx hole shot issues...

    Gents,
just bought a 2005 ranger 521dvx with a Mercury EFI 250 on it. Issue is when you first hit the throttle from idle it doesn’t rev up immediately, if you hold it half throttle or so for a few seconds it will
then rev up and you can floor it and take off. Just trying to figure out if this is normal or not. Prop is a tempest plus 25p. It also seems like if the motor is trimmed up at all it won’t rev past 1500 or so and seems to skip or bog.

    thanks in advance

Have you tried removing or adjusting PVS plugs?

If you've got plugs installed that will make a huge difference.

Remove any PVS plugs as they reduce exhaust venting you need to turn up into the torque range. If your trying to reduce venting, then add PVSnpkugs though that won’t help the lag your experiencing. That’s possibly normal in your rig and we like a second or so venting when loaded. It thrusts the midrange up faster and drives through to the torque range.

Also a four blade small tube propeller will help and you can pick those up for less bucks. Today you have all sorts of options in Bravo, Four Blade Fury and more which were not available when your engine was built. Also have a good tech. set the TPI on the engine if you haven’t. Simple process and just takes a few minutes.

So i pulled the one and only PVS out(which was really just a reducer to about a 3/8" hole) and the prop blew out as soon as i got in the gas.. I think Im going to see if I can find a larger hole pvs.

Sounds like a motor issue to me not a prop venting issue but could be wrong.

yes motor is full trim down and jackplate down. I've also tried jackplate up a bit. Im thinking basscatboats may be right and I need look into the Throttle position sensor.

Venting is still a huge requirement on the big 2 stroke block.

I have a 2004 521VX and I don't have that problem. I say get your TPS checked out 1st. I run a Temptest 27p 3 blade SS. Mine does just fine out of the hole and top end also.

What engine are you running to efficiently turn a 27 Tempest?
