    Broken Skeg

I broke 2 big chunks off of my skeg on my TM2. Am I just asking for trouble if I get it welded or should I just replace
    the case?

Can easily be welded.... Just need the right guy for the job.... Insurance will cover it as well.

With the speeds these rigs are capable of..
I would never be comfortable with a weld job. From the looks of that there could also be some interior damage that may not show up till later. I would insist on a replacement from insurance. take it to the right shop and they can plead your case to insurance adjuster if they balk.

I appreciate the replies. I am leaning toward replacing the case, however most of the skeg is still intact. My thought is if it was welded and broke off, most of the skeg would still be there. This is a TM, not a SM so I am not running it real high. Even at high speed, I should still have control if the weld broke. High speed for me is less than 85 MPH.

Your flirting with disaster....get a new case with insurance....don't back down....insurance will pay for a new case, if advocated properly.

That can be repaired and I've seen many allisons run a cut down skeg on the lighter allison's but i wouldn't take a chance on the set up.

I welded my sportmaster myself. That was 4 years ago.. I have bumped a many stumps in that time. It was broke about like yours. Full penetration weld. Can't let joe shit the rag mans cousins uncles brothers nephew weld it tho. If it was broken up close to the case, where the weld would tie into the case its self, I would not recommend doing that on a high performance rig.. Good luck!

I hit a small log with my boat, no big deal. I had a small spot on the boat and some wood in the water intake. Everything was fine...two weeks later the pinion gear busted, probably from the impact of hitting the log. Insurance paid all but $300 for a used sporty. I think having it welded would be fine but you may have internal issue in the future from whatever broke the skeg (if you were running when the skeg broke), and the only way to tell is disassembly of the case or get another lower unit.

I would replace it specially if insurance is paying for it.
