    Help identifying this

    Does anyone know what this shift is and if its supposed to be exposed like this?

    Looks like the shift shaft, but never seen one exposed like that

    Might get more feedback if you post in the 3L forum (covers your engine) be sure to include engine serial number as well.

    shift shaft and black hose goes in hole right in front of it,and bonding wire looks like its broke

    But why is it not covered, never seen one open like that....

    They are all open, otherwise you wouldn’t have access to align it when reinstalling...

    Really don't know why the rubber washer is on top of the coupling should be below it.

    Appreciate all the feedback. What is that black hose for? It was loose like that when I got the boat. I'll place it in the hole. But the bonding wire is still good. It's just looped behind right there

    The black hose comes from the speedometer pitot in the leading edge of the lower unit. It connects to a fitting on the shift shaft cover. If you don't use your boat speedo you really don't need to worry about it. As bassman mentioned, the rubber washer on top of the coupler should be below it on the shift shaft.

    Somebody didn't know what they were doing when they took that lower unit off for some service.
