    Shimano cranking reels

What's a good Shimano crankbait reel? Gear ratio?

There are lots of Shimano reels that will work well for cranking. I personally really like the Curado DC in the 7.4:1 ratio. I'm a believer that you can use a higher speed reel and just slow your retrieve down. I get a lot of distance and control from the DC casting system and it does a fantastic job when you are casting into the wind. Some crankbaits tumble in the wind and can create some bad backlashes. Using the DC reel basically eliminates that problem and because of that I can cast harder into the wind and therefore have longer casts than I was getting with traditional reels. The only downside is the reel does weigh more than a lot of your non-DC reels. But a little extra weight doesn't bother me and the advantages of the reel definitely make up for the one disadvantage it has.

Mostly billed baits that dive to 8'-12' range.

I use a Bantam for deep cranks and a Chronarch MGL for shallow to mid divers. Both are 7.1 ratios. I agree with the easy to slow down statement.

I like a slower reel and still crank with the Calais 100A , which is 5.8:1. Here’s the variable no one talks about...I actually fill my reels with line to capacity. I’ve talked to an awful lot of people that crank with a 7:1 or similar, but then fill the reel to 80% capacity. At that point, your IPT will be similar. Just sayin...

Tranx 200 either 6 or 7 gear ratio, whichever you prefer.

I still use my 13+ year old Curado DPV 5.0:1, and Curado E5 for cranking. clean and lube them every year, they are tanks. I may keep them forever.
