    Smile 87 Ranger 375V - new guy

    Good evening everyone,

    First time boat owner!

Came across this forum looks like a wealth of knowledge here - recently purchased 87 ranger with 87 mercury black max 150.. its old as dirt but i got it running pretty good, that being said. I am having an issue finding a throttle housing. Does anyone have a couple of good parts places that sell stuff this old, or is there a conversion website somewhere maybe to see what parts are cross compatible?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the Ranger Family and the BBC.
Wealth of knowledge on this site.
My BIL had same boat and year except he had a Yamaha.
I think I loved that boat more than he did. Lol.
It was a West Coast Classic.
Now to your question, I would try Ranger Parts, give them a call and have your HIN# handy so they can look up your actual boat. If they are no help/don't have it. Try Great lakes skipper, they have a lot of stuff for older boats. Hope this helps and good luck.

Welcome to the forum. Also try posting on the Mercury forum for the part you need. That part will be specific to that engine, and possibly someone over there even has a part [or knows of a part] from an old engine that is no longer functioning and only good for parts.

Congrats on the Ranger but an 87 is not old.......
I just replaced my control box from 87 to a newer style that uses Gen. 2 cables.... I recommend you go that route as it's an upgrade.... Can you post a picture of your box and what you're looking for? I still have my old one hanging around.

As for that Black Max, make sure the air filter foam on the cowling is clean and free of oil and dirt. My dad washes his in light dawn dishsoap water every year and his Black Max 150 still runs like a champ. Back in the late 90's he had bogging problems and couldn't get higher RPM. Figured out it was the foam air filter in the cowling that was all clogged up with oil from the exhaust when it would smoke on startup....

Thank you - i was able to find bolts and nuts that fit the openings perfectly(ace hardware haha). Re-secured current throttle housing by squeezing arm all the way back and attaching. No wire interference and got bolts that don't come loose due to vibration. This throttle housing should due for a little while, i can focus on other things haha!

@paulrodbender - that diagram is beautiful! i needed it 2 days ago :) Thank you all for the support.
