Has any bass fisherman really been able to get by with no pedal and just the remote?

I used to use the remote mostly when I had my Xi5 but the pedal was terrible so it was the lesser of two evils. Was way easier when fishing offshore structure. Whether or not it will work for you just depends on your fishing style. I like the consistency of a cable steer for bass fishing (Ultrex) so that's what I use.

Treat others like you want to be treated when on the water EVEN WHEN IN A TOURNAMENT! No fish is worth having a confrontation because you cut someone off or came in on top of someone.
I am gonna add ipilot to my powerdrive 50 for Next year. Like the option.
do you fish for bass primarily
Seems like I hardly use the pedal much anymore. Mainly spot lock and when I want to move up a bank or channel just hit jog and let the tm do the work. Lazy man's way to fish, I guess.

I’ve got a terrova but this still applies. I don’t use my pedal much.i use the remote
My buddy has a Minnkota with only a remote and it's terrible for bass fishing. It has spot lock and it's also not worth a crap. A cable controlled trolling motor is IMO the only way to go for bass fishing.
