Looking at a Used 2080...need advice with potential problem

Looking at buying a 2019 AVX 2080 with 200 Merc. Motor has 140hrs. Owner says he gets about 55mph with 2 people. That’s about 10mph slower than it should be getting. A friend/dealer says be careful, something could wrong. Thoughts on where the speed loss could be or if I need to be looking for a problem. Hull is a new replacement from Vexus, so no issues with the hull...got to be on the motor or set up. Does have manual jackplate.

Well, that could be. The current owner seems pretty competent and bass boat experienced. You never know though.

Thats all pretty easy to investigate. What prop does the boat have on it? What RPM is the motor running at wide open. How big are the two people and how much weight is in the boat? live wells full? Take the boat for a test drive without anything in it. You could also have the motor checked over by a competent Mercury mechanic. If the deal is right its worth the extra work.

That was my whole point. Its easy to check these things out. The boat has a new hull. Doubt there is a problem with it. The motor could even be mounted to high to low after the new hull..Lots of easy things to check. If the boat doesn't pass muster then its hard pass.

All good points. According to the current owner, boat has not been back in the water since it came back from Vexus (ie..new hull has never been in the water). I’ll certainly check it out by a mechanic and a test run in the boat too.

That was probably the speed with the damaged hull?

I don't see a problem. It's a 19 model motor if something is wrong it is under warranty. It is a new hull.

That was the speed with damaged hull. New information: Getting 61mph at 5900rpm at WOT with new hull. Quarter tank fuel and 2 people, no tackle. Something still isn’t right. Mounted on second hole on motor and jackplate is up maybe an inch or so best I can tell.

61 is close! Just a little adjustment and it’s were it needs to be. Prop, PTP adjust and it’s there. Hope you get a great deal in it.

    I would think 68 to 70 mph for a 200.

Not even close with a 200, maybe a 225. 200 should push that boat low to mid 60's, maybe 66 or 67 in right conditions with one person.

My 2080 with Merc 200 ProXS with myself, 230lbs, the wife 130lbs, 15 gal of fuel, fishing tackle, no water in live well,Ghost TM, 8"chop, 5800 RPM, hydraulic plate with prop shaft 2" below pad ran 65.3 mph, on Lowrance GPS.

Does anyone know the formula to figure optimum speed? Figures in pitch, and RPM? that's
a good starting point. No boat will run faster than the calculated speed, due to weight and drag.

I had talked to the performance manager at Vexus because my 1980 will just not stay up on pad even by myself, There are a few different things that he had me check #1 traducer position (using straight edge make sure it is slightly above the hull to "skim" the water, #2 jackplate height I told him what mine and he said "I should be in the typical area of performance for the 1980." #3 make sure prop is not damaged. #4 Performance weld being to thick and that would require me to go to the dealer to have it ground down and Vexus would have to send them paperwork for the repair for documentation.

If you are having performance issues talk with Gary Howard at Vexus, very nice guy and I am sure he could help you.

if you are not getting at least 5800 rpms from the motor then you might want to check you throttle linkage,
you might not have it set to where you can attain full throttle.

Also not all props are created equal. so if you beg or borrow a buddies prop the same specs as yours are give it a run to see if your speed changes
