    Lake Whitney

Little bro and I fished Whitney for the first time last Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Got into a bunch of small stripers and hybrids on top water and crankbaits. Also caught a few largemouth doing the same. Ned Rig produced some decent largemouth, but no smallmouth unfortunately. Had a really nice largemouth (4 pound +) jump off right at the boat after a couple of drag screaming runs. We stayed on the lower end of the lake for the most part, as I really wanted to catch some brownies. That is something I have missed since moving from Arkansas.

Any tips for when we go back? I do plan to target some larger stripers next time.

Years ago it was the best smallmouth lake in the state. They got wiped out by golden algae blooms. There might be one caught every once in awhile but very rare.

Most all of the smallies in the record book there were caught in the cold weather/water months, and at night
The Texas top list below indicates most, if not all the Big 'Uns, on Whitney were caught by the same Fella. Ron Gardner

    1 Meredith 7.93 23 03/13/1998 Timothy Teague
    2 Whitney 7.72 22 11/20/1988 Ronald Gardner

I am afraid that algae crap ruined those days. Or, at least for n ow.

Gardner learned the lake from his father.
