I still use my old Ambassadeur 4500/4600 reels and they are far and above more reliable than any of the newer reels. Clean them and oil them once a year and they're good to go. New C3 models are $100-ish and used 4500s are fairly easy to find in nice condition.
Yeah, they're not as smooth or as fast as the newer ones, but they WORK when I go to the lake. The only caveat is that you need a pretty educated thumb.
