    Champ 198 Setup Help

    Hello,

I'm running a 2006 Champ 198 w/225 Pro Xs. WOT 5,500 RPM and 65 MPH and great hole shot. 4" below pad with 24p Tempest. So, my question is...Good numbers for this rig? I have a 25 pitch Tempest, but not in best shape. Engine up or down to get more RPMs? Just seems like I'm missing a small tweek to get the RPMs in the 5800-5900 range and most out of her... Or be happy with 65 MPH and Fish!

    Thank for your advice/help!

I would try to raise it 1/4 inch at a time til you lose lift, watch your water pressure to and 3.5 inches below pad is a good starting point.

Probably need a 25 tempest plus. Run it at 3.5 below pad.

I agree your motor probably needs to go up a tad. Get your 25 worked by Mark. A fury 3 blade 25 would be s good choice also.

The right setup is a worked 26 tempest with positive transom wedges.

See this all the time, a higher pitched prop isn’t going to help him if he can’t even get to max rpms now. I’d have the motor looked at to make sure you have all the cylinders firing.

Are you using a merc monitor or the regular tach, could the tach be wrong.

Is your hotfoot reaching 100% WOT.

Is this speed/rpms completely loaded down or empty.

Does the motor have a billion hours on it.

Could be all kinds of things.

Every single 198 found potential with the 26 and positive trim. The secret is a 26 tempest is a turd out of the box and the right hand makes it exact.

I'm running a good 26 Tempest plus at 3.75 prop to pad. All large holes in prop. 5750 rpms..71.9 with two substantial bodies and full load of gear. 3 sec hole shot.

Yep raise it up to about 3.5" and get a Temp 26+ with a Champ cup in it. My rig runs 71 with that but its a 2008 198. My Temp 25 runs about 66ish. I do like the bite on the 25 better though it seems to ride more forward on the pad giving a bit more stability. The 26 is a bit slower out the hole.
    RPM should be higher.

    Pat,
Are these little metal screw in trim extenders pieces the same as positive wedge? I use them.

Yes, same result. Some people don't trust the extenders and install a positive transom wedge.

Yup. Should be close to 3.5" below the pad. My 196 runs best at 3 3/8" below running a Croxton Razor 4 XL. The prop isn't the right one, but it's not bad. I should be running a worked 25p Tempest, and I'll get there eventually. Heck of a nice rig BTW.

I just picked up a 26TP that's been balanced and blue printed from Steve's Prop Shop. It also had some cup added to it.... I'm really curious to test run with it. Also just picked up a set of trim extenders to test out.

It was incredibly clean and got a superb deal on it.

Please run it with the prop first and then add the extenders. Can you also post your RPMs with the 26 and your other prop.

If the trim extenders help, which they likely will then you need to add the wedge. The trim extenders should be a temporary usage.

Exactly what I did. 26 Tempest Plus worked by Mark Croxton. Transom wedge and a 10 inch manual slide master. 67 to 68 loaded.
