what is the painting process for soft plastic baits?

How do I go about painting soft plastic baits ? Mostly what kind of paint and how to clear over it .I would like to spiff up some swimbaits and such . I have an air brush for crankbaits but the water based craft paints I use rub right off soft plastics . What do you pro painters use for this ?

another option that i have done is paint with your air brush and then dip in clear plastisol for the 'clear coat'
