If you own a pro xs opti would you buy another one? Thinking about repowering boat with a new left over 2017 150 Owned old EFIs previously. It’s half price of a new 4 stroke

Yes. Heck yes for half the price. I’d love to have the new V8 but if I could get a brand new 2s for half the price, that’s what I’m buying
I have a 2010 ProXS 200.. and freaking LOVE it after running carb motors my whole life to this point.. It's a horse

I honestly would not own another mercury 2-stroke. I had nothing but issues from my 2015 150 ProXs. I had that boat in the shop 5 times in the first 130 run hrs. Tracker valves, idler pulleys, fuel regulators, and then compressor/tracker valve/fuel regulator/injectors/fuel rails.

I went from an Opti to a carbed motor and coulndt be happier. The opti is overly engineered and plagued with problems. Look at the Merc forum on this site. Its mainly full of opti problems people are having. Its just crazy reading about all the powerheads and compressors that blow on those things before 500 hours.

Any Opti after about 2007 is going to be solid. There are so many of them out there that is bound to be several PITA ones. I have put A LOT of hours on Opti and never had a major problem. A single compressor, a single TPS sensor and a set of spark plugs wires. A total of 3 trips to the shop going back to 2010.
Use good gas/oil, Don’s cocktail, let it warm up, run it hard then let it cool before turning it off has always worked for me. Buy a Mercmonitor for the new motor. They are invaluable for monitoring the motor’s health.

Yes!!!... Hell Yes!!!... Dan
I have a 2011 Opti 200,I’d buy another one in a minute.
I owned 1 Mercury pro XB and 2 Mercury pro xs 2 strokes and none of the pro xs 2 strokes saw 100 hours without a blown powerhead. The Pro xb broke 3 driveshafts in 4 years. Walk behind the stage every night at the tournament of your choice and the Mercury service trailer has a line every night. About 5 or 6 years ago a lot of guys would say we see more Mercury's break down because there are so many more of them in use at tournaments. Now days you see Yamaha, Mercury, Honda and Suzuki at all tournaments, and at the end of the days the Mercury's are still the most common to find broke down. I have owned and or run 4 different brands of outboards over 25 years of fishing and I can say I gave Mercury a shot one too many times thinking they would improve quality.
You see more merc issues because their are more mercs on the water for a simple reason they preform better. Every manufacturer has issues no matter what they build.
For half the price of the new 4-stroke I think I could tolerate an Opti and I'm a 4-stroke guy. The mechanics that have worked on them for better than two decades still know how to work on them as long as parts are available. Every brand will have at least a couple turds in the punch bowl so it's more of a roll of the dice than anything.

Treat others like you want to be treated when on the water EVEN WHEN IN A TOURNAMENT! No fish is worth having a confrontation because you cut someone off or came in on top of someone.
Technological advances in the Mercury outboards prompted the discontinuation of all the 2 strokes. You'll see the other outboard OEMs following suit. Evinrude ceased all production and they only had 2 strokes in the line up. It's inevitable that the entire market will all be 4 strokes in the next few years.
I sold my Merc 250 Opti in March 2018 while it still held value. New Merc V8 250hp repower got hung in July 2018. Two years on it now and I would do the same thing if I had a do-over.
The new V8 eliminates allot of the problematic 2 stroke items like the compressor and DFI oil mixing/related components and is replaced with a more simplistic 4 stroke engine. 100 hours for oil/filter & LU gear lube change is 35% less expensive as compared to feeding an Opti DFI oil for the same usage. The V8 does use 5% more fuel than the Opti (per Merc monitor).
Everyone will end up with a 4 stroke sooner or later.
Everyone will, but that's because of emissions.
Emissions are irrelevant. All major production 2 & 4 stroke outboards meet/exceed current CARB 3 ultra low requirements.
