    18 TRX Transducer Location

Hi guys, just bought a Helix 7 CHIRP Mega DI GPS G3 for the console of my 18 TRX to replace the Lowrance Hook 5 the boat came with.

Before I install it I would like to hear your experience in placing the transducer. I would like very much for it to read depth at higher speeds without exchanging the 'ducer for a through hull unit. I am running a 6" manual jack plate.

I am considering using a Stern Saver mounting pad or a Premier Sonar No Drill Jack Plate mount. You may have noticed that neither of these require drilling holes in my transom.

Please share your successful mounting locations that allow mph reading at 50+ mph.

Also share your mounting method of the sonar unit i.e. Flush, ram, or other and advantages/disadvantages of your.

    Thank you for your help.

I had a tremendous amount of help from the Triton Forum when trying to prop my rig especially Roy ( TritonTRXV8 ) and am looking forward to some more help this time.

I am sure others will chime in, but in my experience you’re going to need a through the hull to read at those speeds. Basically you will need a Y adapter, so you can use it through the hull for typical sonar and then your other transducer mounted probably on your jack plate for your down imaging. That’s what I did, and I can read sonar depths at all speeds. I’ve never been able to read depth on a transom mount transducer past about 25 mph.

Mark, I think your post helps me realize I am probably chasing a unicorn.
So I will need the Y adapter and an additional through the hull transducer?
Will the sonar unit read the depth and other functions from different transducers without “ toggling” the controls on the Helix unit?

I agree a thru hull transducer will be best for high speed depth readings. I have the y cable setup on mine and it works really well. I mounted my hdsi transducer under the jack plate with a bracket i made to keep it safe at high speeds from any impacts. I did a gimbal mount on the dash. I made the aluminum plate to mount it to. Rock solid. For a 7” unit you could easily do a flush mount.

Regular sonar will read through the hull, it will still show structure and even fish. The transducer you have on the transom will be your DI, you do not have to toggle any switch just the screens.

I agree with the comments with the work Roy does, I wish I lived closer to him for obvious reasons!! haha
