It's next on the list of things to do to mine, but will more than likely go 250. Probably won't be anytime soon either haha.

    Jeff,

I know cost is always a factor, but the 200 was the smallest motor they put on the 201. I spent a lot of money on my 200EFI to get it to really perform for that hull, but l aways wondered what a 250 ProXs would be like on the back. Since you are at the point of buying a new motor, and it would appear with this decision you are keeping the boat for the long term, maybe the additional cost of the 250 spread out over the years of ownership would be something to consider. I was planning on selling my EFI this spring and buy a lightly used 2 stroke ProXs 250 since there are several for sale as people are repowering to the 4 stroke. However, as I have posted before, a very lightly used boat was offered to me at a price I could not pass up. So I bought the boat and sold the Cobra. I will always wonder what it would have done with a 250 on the back.....................

well, before my 99 201 got smashed in a road accident, I hab a 250XB on the back, 12 inch plate and a 25 Tempest.
Decided to open it up once on a flat stretch of river...when the GPS said 75 I backed off...little spooky, but I still had pedal left so I would say it will go pretty darn quick.

I have an 18'8 and had to repower so I went from a 150 efi to a 200 efi and that thing screams.. My top speed with the 150 was 53/54.. With the 200 efi it is 65 and I still have some to go. Kind crazy going 65 in a 18'8...Wish I could find a good 20ft cobra..

Yea I wish I could done a 250 but almost 5k more decided to just do a 200 with 5 extra year warranty. I could done a 225 for about what I paid for the 200 and the warranty. I'm having it put on tomorrow once I get it broke in I let you all know how it does on the 201.

great looking rig. If you don't mind me asking, about how much does it cost to repower to a new four stroke? Been thinking about doing it myself.

Thanx for the reply. What kind of results are you seeing with the new motor(speed, hole shot, etc)? That motor really looks good on the back of your boat!

I recently repowered my 2001 190 dual console with a 250 Merc 4 stroke pro xs. My coast guard tag says max hp is 250. I have read that a few others have the same tag but most say max 200 hp. I still have the basic 8” jackplate and turning a 27p tempest plus 3 blade. I am just now out of the initial break in. I have had to learn how to drive it all over again. The torque on the 4 strokes is amazing. It’s a balancing act to really go all out. I still have a lot of testing on engine height. I already know I need to have the prop worked. It has been windy and too choppy to really let it fly but I touched 77+ fully loaded, full gas and live well with my fishing partner. It’s a puckering adrenaline experience worth every penny!
