Provided there isn’t an issue with the GPS receiver or the satellites the GPS will tend to be more accurate.

GPS. It isn’t dependent on direction or calibration to measure speed.

But isn’t there a +/- on the readings from gps satellites? All things equal I would think that a radar gun would pretty dang close to gps accuracies.

I’m just spitballing here, so I really have no idea if I’m even in the ball park.

I didn't trust a speedo even before GPS.

GPS on all boats except a Ranger.
On a Ranger use the boat speedo as they typically show a higher speed.

A lot of boats suddenly got slower when people started putting gps on their boats. Honestly don't even see the point in having a traditional speedo on MOST boats anymore.

Not everyone knows everything about a boat. Many people are new to boats and have to start somewhere with the questions.

I’m going to go against the trend and say it depends.
Are you talking about speed over ground or speed through water?
If you want to know how long it’s going to take you to get from point a to point b, then GPS is the best, but if you want to set your trolling speed then you need to know your speed relative to the water, not the bottom (and I wouldn’t trust a boat speedometer for that, you need the proper sensor attached to your electronics for that http://www.airmar.com/productdescription.html?id=104 )

Also commonly referred to as the "dreamometer" on boats around here...gps is far more accurate.

A speedometer gauge is a joke. That’s something you take out and put a radio in it’s spot. GPS, when in the open is usually in sight of 24-28 satellites and is very accurate.

    https://www.gps.gov/systems/gps/performance/accuracy/

so GPS accuracy on chartplotters is typically within .2% assuming no signal blockages from trees, weather, etc.
