I learned how to fish brush at Santee 40 years ago. No gps, just using lineups or compass headings.

Easy to find piles you can use one marker buoy. Best way to stay locked onto a hard to find pile, idle over it with a marker buoy in each hand. When you mark the brush, chunk one marker to the left, one to the right. If there’s wind or current, adjust the toss of your markers to compensate so your markers don’t drift over the brush. Your brush will be between the markers.

Bright orange or yellow marker buoys are easy for others to see, which is a downside. In the past I’ve done everything from painting markers black to using something small like medicine bottles. But nowadays if someone wants your spot, there’s not much you can do to stop them from riding by hitting a waypoint.
