Best choice for a 12v trolling motor?

I have a 17' Nitro and need to replace the trolling motor. I have no desire to go to 24 volt for this small boat.

I've been "out of the game" for many years and have little knowledge of the newer motors.

I want a lesser expensive unit (under$1000) and while Spot-Lock would be nice it is not mandatory.

Are the "wired" (no cable) foot controls giving any trouble? Looks intriguing but also something else to fail?

Who is running a 12v model that can give me any advice ... good or bad.

I'd go MinnKota. I think they make the Maxxum in a 55# 12v still.

Best choice would be a Motorguide X3 55# thrust but any will be good. You really should look at a 24v. I had a 17 Nitro with both a 12v then a 24v. It is much easier to fish and control the boat with a 24v...even a 17’ boat. I recently helped my brother convert his 17’ Triton to a 24v and he was amazed at the improvement.

Minn Kota Maxxum FOR SURE! the motor is great, and it comes with a stout mount. The Minn Kota Edge's mount is too flimsy.

I had a 55 Maxxum on a 17ft Ranger and had to run 2 batteries in parallel to have enough juice to to stay all day. Had to change it out and went with an 80# fortrex because I was already running 2 batteries and boy howdy did it make it fish like a whole different boat

So OP, got a question for you. Have you ever had a 24v trolling motor on a boat? Most people who have won't go back to a 12v unless it's just a little tin rig. I wouldn't even have a 55# 12v on my 17.5' tin rig because I like how an 80# 24v snatches the boat around even in high wind. If you only fish on days where the wind doesn't blow a 12v is fine but it really sucks to have to cancel a trip or leave early because your trolling motor isn't up to the task.
