    461vs set up?

Looking for recommendations on fine tuning a 1996 461VS w/Merc 150EFI that I picked up this spring.

    • 23 Tempest Plus (new)
    • Remove 2 plugs and leave one Large Hole plug in, ok hole shot, 3500 rpms on breakover
    • All plugs out, blow out on hole shot, 5000 on breakover, need to feather.
    • Motor is on a 6" Manual Jack Plate, 3.75" below pad
    • WOT 5800 rpms
    • Porpoising at low speeds (30 MPH and under), need to stay trimmed down

I'd like to improve my hole shot if possible, not overly concerned with top end speed.

Since I'm out of options on prop plugs (my assumption), is engine height the next to play around with? Up or down to improve holeshot?

I had the same boat and prop. It jumped out of the hole for me. Can’t remember how many holes plugged or even jackplate height. Did you try all holes plugged or just one out?

All the plugs in, the thing was a pig coming out of the hole. Didn't try only one out, went right to two out and saw a improvement, but it's not what I would call jumping out. Still takes a few seconds for the motor to wind up.

Owned the same boat without the jackplate. I never had issues. The 23' Tempest is the best prop

Raise motor 1/4” and retest, then raise another 1/4. That boat runs solid around 3.25” prop to pad. Compare all three settings
