    Kayak Rod

My brother has one of those pedal type Kayaks. I am thinking about building a fishing rod for him and was wondering what the ideal length might be. I am guessing a 6' spinning rod might be a good choice but wanted experienced opinions before I order the blank. Thanks

It doesn’t need to be short I throw my 7’6 from my kayak so I would build one that would complement his favorite technique.

Short handles seem to be more user friendly, at least for me.

Been a few times, first time I went I took a small rod, that was a mistake.. So I ordered a Fitzgerald spinner, 7 footer, and put together a bag just for the kayak..

7' or longer. Harder to throw if you're lower and you can't get your body into it.

Rod length is still just preference but handle length can be shorter. Not crazy short that makes it so unbalanced, but
aybe the old school normal back before the long butts got popular.

I too prefer a shorter handle from a Yak if you fish from a sitting position. I built a short handle stiff spinning rod to make short pitches in heavy cover and it worked out great.

I can't remember which maker but one of the better named ones released a line of rods designed for kayak anglers last year. I think the biggest thing was the shorter butt section to be able to move it around a little easier in the cockpit. I actually like one on the shorter side because I can get up close into all the places I like to fish so I don't usually feel the need to cast as far. Also, when having to untangle something around the tip a longer rod becomes a pain to position in the kayak.

I use everything from a 6'6" to a 7'6''...butt length, as mentioned is the key...and remembering where those other rods are when you get ready to cast. I've lost count at the number of times I've caught my own rod that was right behind my back.

St. Croix builds a "Mojo yak" rod...I believe the only difference between it and their popular "mojo bass" lineup is the shortened butt of the rod and also a switch form cork to "rubber"/synthetic grips.
