Prime Minister Hassan Diab said that 2,750 metric tons of ammonium nitrate, which is typically used as an agricultural fertilizer, had been stored for six years at a warehouse in the port of Beirut without safety measures, "endangering the safety of citizens," according to a statement.

If I had to guess it was a munition storage area. A fire started there which ignited some kind of a large bomb. Kind of like the M.O.A.B!
If you want a pig, flip a jig!!!
The conversion rate for ammonium nitrate to TNT is like 42%. 2950X.42=1239 tons of explosive material. Crazy. For reference, the MOAB yields about 46T. That's basically the equivelant of 27 MOABS all at once.
Probably have some stronger regulations on how that chicken poop is stored in the future over there.
Timothy McVeigh used 4,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate to blow up the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City in 1995.

Regulations only work if they are enforced. West, TX suffered a terrible tragedy from a similar explosion only it was a small town and not the port in a crowded city. The company that stored the ammonium nitrate in Texas was not following the rules. This stuff is more powerful than 99.9% of us can imagine.
newsmax said it was felt over 150 miles away , 300,000 buildings and homes damaged or destroyed
