Is my lower unit out or did my motor blow?

Have a 2000 200hp optimax serial#0T62049. While trying to get on plane the motor jerked a few times and died. Now it won't start. Prior to this the motor had been acting weird when getting on plane such as feeling loss of power intermittently then surging like the prop was slipping.

How do I check if it's the lower unit that went out or if my motor blew?

Based on that question it may be best if you have someone more experienced take a look at it. Start by spinning the prop by hand and listening, after that decouple the two systems (drop lower) and check each system individually for damage.

The 1st thing I would do is pull the spark plugs and see if there is aluminum welded to the tips.

First thing I would do is remove the belt and see if it cranks.
