    Zman patents

Heard zman patent protection ended. Already seen a bait by Billy Philips bait company with direct attachment. Has anyone else seen any bladed jigs with direct attachment ?

When was the patent filed? 2000-2001 seems like it could be correct. I saw them at a local marina in probably 02-03. Silly me, wouldn’t buy one even after the owner showed it to me in the water. All I could think about was how much hell I caught for fishing the helicopter lure in 7th grade.

No, the Z-Man patents have not expired.

Also, the trade dress registration on the hexagonal blade is unrelated to the patents and does not expire.

I think they had to change something about the blades as well, but I didn’t notice that.

Love me some Z-man. I tied two the big TRDs together and use it as a self-launching rope. I've got a transom tiewdown about to go, and I will replace it with a Z popping frog.

Z-Man patent doesn't expire until 2026, application was granted in 2016 and patents have a 20 year life in the US.

Good point! Apparently they have at least two patents on “chatterbait” type lures and you used to get 20 years from the time of application. They have one expiring in 2024 and another in 2026.
