I was recently told to not purchase a four blade fury prop. The person told me that the four blade fury props are known for slinging ears. Any truth to this?

I put about 600 hours on a 24 and have put another 20 on a 25 with no problems.

Yes they will throw a blade it depends on how you run them.
I have one. No problem so far. I think when folks are piercing the surface that’s when it happens more often

It is a 50/50. Get a good one or get a bad one. I would not risk it.
Loved mine till it turned into a 3 1/2 blade!

I have a 26 Fury 4 that I`ve had for 3 years run it in Spring and Fall, been flawless. I am currently on my 3rd 25 Fury 4,well not quite might have an issue getting this one warranted,If they don`t,I will never buy one again.

I don't know whats wrong with them but Mercury knows they have a problem. The three blade fury will do the same if you try to run it too high.
Should you run the Fury 4 lower or higher than the 3?
Higher. It has more diameter and extra blade.

I know a guy on Erie that went through 4 this season on his Ikon.

I have been running a Fury 4 for about 5 years now on my Z521 Ranger SHO with no problems. I spoke with a well known prop man recently about sending it to him to tune it up. He expressed surprise that I had run it for so long without throwing an ear.
He says the blades work harden over time and eventually fracture. He explained that all blades flex forward from the force of the water pushing on the back of the blade and this causes the work hardening. The Mercury Fury props use a stiffer alloy in the metal and if Merc would change their heat treating process for the Fury it would alleviate the problem. Of course, the stiffer alloy allows them to make the blades thinner and thus improving performance
No doubt running the prop in surfacing conditions would exacerbate the flexing and accelerate the work hardening of the blades
The Fury 4 give my barge of a boat a lot of stern lift, as all 4 blade props tend to do. Since I have gone to all lithium batteries and took ~200# out of the back of the boat I don’t really need all that stern lift anymore. After talking with him I finally decided to shelve the Fury 4. I bit the bullet and bought the $1000 Yamaha T2 prop and have been amazed with the super bow lift of this prop and have regained much of the performance I lost after going lithium

I have had two. Both performed great on my Ranger but both slung a blade. One of which was bought new and had under 15 hours on it. IMO there's two types of fury 4s, "Those that have slung blades and those that are going to sling a blade".

Go with a Bravo XS, better performance than a Fury 4, and they sling blades much less often.
I love my fury 4 but I have slung a blade. I was hauling ass in some good chop so prop was coming out of water, so I can’t blame the prop. I have been running them for over 5 years now because my boat needs the stern lift.
