You didn’t say what frequency youre using in what depth, but it’s probably at its limitations of range.

using high frequency set at 50 to 60 ft, most time less than 20 ft

1120 hz is only good for about 30-40' out each side....even the manual says it has a 30' max depth....go to 455 if your try to get distance......you really have to play with contrast and brightness with Garmin....as well as different color pallette....they are decent when all dialed in and you know the limitations.

    GT54UHD Specs:
    ClearVü: 0.94°x60° @ 800 kHz
    SideVü: 1.62°x50°
    UHD SideVü: 0.441°x52° @ 1200 kHz

So 52 degrees each side at most. There’s at least 38 degrees of “blind spot” each side.

WOW, 30 to 40 feet max wide on SI is really weak!

You keep saying this, and it’s completely BS. What manual are you reading?
MAXIMUM DEPTH CHIRP: 800 ft.; ClearVü 200 ft.; SideVü 500'; UHD SideVü 125'

Its a matter of simple geometry, angle and depth are all you need to calculate the range. Perhaps you have your SideVu range limited / zoomed, or in shallow water?

If I recall right I get around 60 each side in my usual 25’ +/- 5-10 ft of UHD side

I’ve seen the same effect, yet not that ‘bad’. The 1120 and 455 need separate contrast levels, that sadly need to be manually adjusted, unless I’m mistaken. I think it’s displaying that the water depth is increasing, yet poorly exaggerated, IMO. If you turn the contrast up, you’ll be able to see the dark areas. Unless the depth dropped off steeply enough that the sonar couldn’t bounce off it. I could be wrong about that theory. Do you have any interference issues? Could likely be coincidence but I don’t recall seeing that effect as much after I solved my interference problem.

put angle ∠β=52°, and A as your depth and calculate. B will be your range. At 125ft deep it’s just shy of 160 ft wide on flat bottom.
