    Rebuild or what?

    Mariner 200 efi magnum OG129892.
Ok last Thrusday son had a high school tournament. Idle seemed ok. Ran on plane fine for about five miles then hit a no wake zone after getting back on plane from that the engine surged twice then smoothed out. When we headed back in to the ramp for weigh in the surge came back then started slowing down losing power. The warning light flashed twice, don't remember hearing a warning buzzer. I shut it off. My son said we forgot to switch tanks, it wouldn't crank up. Don't think the starter engaged. Got a tow back to the ramp, tilt/trim wouldn't work. Got the boat on the trailer and loosened the pressure release valve and got the transom saver on. Took the cowl off and there was water on the starboard side of the block. The next day we pulled the spark plugs and had metal flakes on number one and two plugs with number one being the worse. I tried to turn the engine over by the fly wheel and it would only turn about three quarters of a turn then stopped. Was able to get a bore scope and the number one piston had damage to it as well as number two. As far as we could tell without pulling the heads the cylinder walls looked ok. Wont have time to pull the heads until next week. Thoughts on what may have caused this and would it it be worth rebuilding or sell it and take a loss? If rebuildable what would a ball park price be provided there's no other damage?

First picture is of the number one piston, second is number 2. Also the oil injection was removed and it is premix at 50:1. Sorry for two separate posts had to resize the pictures.

lots of variables on rebuild / powerhead replace pricing , promise if its locked youll have cyl damage . To those that remove oil injection it wont save um

If it were mine , after machine work ,all new pistons ,bearings , etc , injectors flowed, ecu checked out if efi. If u was to do the work urself, prob close to 2500 or so , or 5k or so ifnu have sumone rebuild it. U will need machine work ,no way around that

Yeah horn works didnt go off till right at the point of it letting go, by the time it went off it was to late. Water pressure was reading almost 25 psi at wot, between 5000 and 6000 rpms. Think I had the outboard mounted to low after removing the old non functioning para lift. Yeah I've rebuilt several vehicle engines in the past so I knew machine work was a must when we took the head off. One thing we noticed the day prior and the day that the engine failed was that it seemed to take a little longer to get on plane. The day the engine let go I noticed when we were on the way back to the last spot to fish it didn't want to go past 5200 rpms. I was thinking it was time for new plugs and prehaps a fuel pump rebuild before the failure but........
Next question, I didn't remove the oil injection, the previous owner did and I know that that's not really a cure all. I was running 50:1 one mix in it. Should I have ran 40:1? Asking so when I do rebuild I'll know which mix is better. Once I get the number one piston out and see the damage better I may try to find a block in better shape and rebuild that instead, will post some pctures of that in the next few days since I'm off for a few.
Sorry to ask so many questions this will be my first outboard engine rebuild and for being kinda long winded.

Ok had some time to tinker with my blown power head. Couldn't turn it completely by fly wheel would stop. Got piston and rod out. Rod bolts were broke and what was left of the bearing was in the exhaust port, rod cap was bent. Found three holes on the block just under where the exhaust divider plate sits. One by the number two piston and two by the number three piston and what looks like a crack under the two by number three. Does this mean the block is shot? 20200822_164622-1.jpg
Obviously the number one cylinder is going to havebto be re sleeved IF the block is reusable or should I go with pln B a reman power head?

I think that's just dead space in the block. Not for cooling or fuel/oil

Tore hell out of it didnt it. Possibly the side pin in the piston (pin that holds ring from spinning) came out and got the port or came out and ring spun and caught port? Looks like it all started from heat , can't really tell but kinda looks like leaned out. Joe can prob tell u better from looking at it. The bearing wasn't the cause , everything came apart after sumthin hooked the port

Can u take a pic of top of piston and also the 2 pins by the rings , I can see 1
