The ball peen hammer said earlier is important. When the nail is pulled out the fibers from the paper sheet of the drywall are raised. If you fill then sand you can see where the paper gets sanded back to.

If your walls are textured, using just a small amount on finger tip will show less after painting. I moved into a house that previous owners must have had lots of pictures and they spackled with a putty knife. Now there are big quarter sized smooth blobs showing where they were...LOL
