I never understood the need for the anti reverse switch. I hate it when i accidentally hit it and think somethings wrong or broken..

Some people like to back real to help the drag out, I personally don't do it but for those that do it is an engrained habbit that they learned. Shimano has lost some spinning reel sales to the back reelers.

I see.. I'm just use to loosening the drag itself. But like you said, some have grown up using it that way and prefer that.
