A limit here is 2 over 21". I've caught dozens of 18+ this year and it breaks my heart watching them swim away.

    Color me jealous.

I'll have to settle for some farm-raised catfish filets at the place across the road for lunch, tomorrow...

They're damn good, but they're not walleye good.

Been able to waylay a limit of eatin'-sized walleyes pretty much at will the past several weekends.

Is it illegal or unethical to hook them, hand the rod to the 6 year old or the wife to reel in, then keep a 3 person limit? Asking for a friend.

We caught quite a few at Cheney back in 72 and 73. Filled the cooler with 4-6 lbers with a lot of white bass too.
Nuthin better than eating walleye-even if they came from Cheney!

Had a good spring for them as incidental catches while bass fishing, 2.8 and 3.3 Keitechs work well for them. Size limit on Beaver and Table Rock is 18". Tasty, but believe it or not, I'll take bluegill fillets over walleye.

I think it depends on the body of water.

Lake Erie walleyes are just excellent, even 12 pounders.

In Green Bay, to eat any walleye over, say 18", you'd better like the taste of beached alewives lingering in your sinuses.

In northern WI, it seems to vary from lake to lake. I like lakes that have a mayfly and emerald shiner forage base, for the best tasting walleyes.

The walleye here are primarily shad eaters, and I didn't mean to imply that they are in any way bad tasting, but I personally find bluegill to be a touch better. But, stripers and white bass, which are primarily shad eaters too in these lakes, are just OK IMO.

I have to agree with you about the location. Walleye from around here are still pretty good, probably my favorite fish to eat, but they're just a bit different from northwest Ontario walleyes.

As Quillback said, shad eating walleyes just aren't as good as emerald shiner eating walleyes.

Green Bay is full of shad, alewives, and hybrids, and the walleyes, especially once they get to 20", just aren't that good.

Erie has an incredible fishery driven by emerald shiners. Even the huge walleyes are indistinguishable from small ones, as far as table fare.

Those Canadian Shield walleyes are probably where they got the reputation for good eating in the first place.

The one good thing to come from an overabundance of zebra mussels is the water clarity at Cheney has improved tenfold. I remember fishing it as a kid and it looked like chocolate milk. Now it's more like a strong tea.

it’s not illegal, but it does make one appear selfish...

I’m hardly an expert, because I really don’t like much fish, but I seem to like walleye better from Bull Shoals when it’s caught in the colder months, with water temps below 60 degrees or so.
