Hold under the gill on one side, the near side. Then you have to press your fingers towards your thumb to secure through a thin skin. Your fingers may get scratched up by the roof of the mouth teeth but it won't be bad.

also always hold horizontal with 2 hands, never vertical by the mouth with one hand because after say 39" in length their weight is enough to dislocate mouth bones. Practice with the next hammer handle northern you get, may only get two fingers in there but it's the same style mouth.

Also muskies are surprisingly fragile, it is best to unhook them while they are in the net in the water if your net is cooperating for this it would be best. If you put them on the deck of the boat to flop around it really hurts them. Removes slime coat and they get sick and they must take a lot of oxygen so being out of the water more than 45 seconds is bad.

Keep the fish in the net in the water, use a long hookout and jaw spreader. Have a wire cutter in the boat that can cut the hook if necessary. Be extremely careful.

They're easiest to handle while hanging on a gaff.
