    1989 201 Pro XL

    Hi Everyone

I'm new to the forums, I've decided to upgrade my small aluminum boat and get a bass boat.

I found this 1989 201 Pro XL (I think, the listing isn't very thorough) browsing craigslist: https://westernmass.craigslist.org/b...121753657.html

I know from reading the forums that these boats are full of wood, so rot would be a big concern, but more importantly is the $5200 ask, without any electronics or a trolling motor.
What do people think this is worth? NADA avg is 3k and low is $2600, and I have to imagine without electronics or a trolling motor it would be on the low side of low retail.

Is it even worth inquiring, or is this ask too far off a fair market price?

    Thanks.

I bought an 89 201 pro xl in 1996 and paid $5500 for it. everything worked. Got rid off it when the transom broke from rot in 1999. You better pass on that money pit.

Too high. Lack of any electronics/tm makes it worse. If you're not "motor handy", and depending on what sort of mechanical talent you have in your area - the Suzuki could be a bother to deal with if needed. I sold a solid '89 285Pro a few years ago with a an Evinrude 175, MG 71#tm, electronics on console & bow plus separate gps plotter along with a few other goodies - for $3k. Looking at the general background environment, I'm WAGging the boat has probably had the same attention given to it. Not too many angles or close-up detail pics in that ad, which also suggests something.

I'd definitely pass and continue shopping.

Anyone notice the palm trees in the background of the boat photos on the Massachusetts Craigslist post? That alone would make me suspicious! There's a member's 96 201 Pro XL on the boats for sale board here at BBC that is priced at $5,800. It looks like a solid boat at a decent price. Wood is nothing to be afraid of as long as it is dry and solid. Take a volt ohm meter with you when you look at a boat with wood. Test for resistance between the tie down eyes and the jack plate bolts. There should be a nil reading (infinite resistance), any reading will indicate a wet transom (wood is an insulator and water is conductive). Tap on the transom with the handle of a screwdriver and test for hollow sounds, and bounce on the cavitation plate a bit to look for transom flex. If it is solid, you can get a decent older boat for not a lot of money.

The post has been removed. If you are looking to spend $5000 I would be all over the members boat listed in the "Boats for Sale " section. That looks like a pretty nice Stratos
