New G2 Owner - Regular Maintenance?

Just wondering what you guys are doing on a regular basis the keep the G2 running great.

What kind of gas are you running? Are you using fuel additives? How often?

    Any other standard maintenance tips?

    Thanks in advance.

Running 87 octane regular with 10% ethanol and Evinrude 2+4 additive (dose per directions on bottle) in a 2018 G2 150 HO. Also putting XD100 at a 100:1 ratio in the tank. Have 100 hours on the motor and while there are 300 hour and 500 hour service intervals, I’ve changed the fuel/water separator filter and thermostats and keep a close eye on the lower unit fluid level and color in the reservoir. I will probably change plugs at the end of this fall. Buy a factory service manual, these things are easy to work on.

Run 87 octane with 10% ethanol, I could get ethanol free but around here it sits longer at the stations do to the higher cost. Add 2+4 to every tank. Run BRP carbon guard and fuel system cleaner in every other tank. Only XD100 oil. Change lower every fall regardless. I take mine to the dealer for the water pump, fuel filters, plugs based on the maintenance schedule. Great motor!

Can I ask what the advantage is to adding oil in the fuel?

I know these new motors are set up to run 87 with 10% ethanol, but I always ran non Ethanol even adding the 2+4. Long term on these new motors, which is better?

Here's one that no one has mentioned... an on-water fuel lift pump vacuum test... a requirement from Evinrude for proper installation that seems to be frequently omitted by many installers. Not exactly routine maintenance but something you probably should do before you start racking up the hours. Won't help to be a maintenance freak if you have a vacuum leak or fuel restriction.

Or you can hope because it's a new boat from the factory that it's all good....

Not a water lift pump. A fuel lift pump vacuum test done on the water. A test to monitor "maximum inlet fuel vacuum at the inlet to the fuel lift pump under any operating conditions idle to WOT" and to check for "air bubbles in the fuel line that would indicate a faulty hose, connection or fuel tank pick up."

Here is a pic of my setup and a link to a youtube video that I did awhile back. It's not an instructional video on how to do the test just a video I used to monitor the clear fuel line for air bubbles. I did some other tests shortly after installing my motor. I think it showed too many bubbles. Some thought it was probably OK but it bothered me. So, I ran all new fuel line, used Otiker clamps, deleted the tank selector valve and ran a single line directly to my G2 from my main tank via the on-boat Rakor water fuel separator. (I don't need the auxillary tank.) Then I retested and found a lower vacuum and essentially no bubbles at all. I feel a lot better about it now. I really think a good fuel delivery system is critical to the health of any motor.

Anyway, in doing some of the first tests, I realized how hard it is to visually monitor the clear fuel line for bubbles at WOT. It was not fun! So, I set up my go pro to monitor it and then I could watch it later. Much easier and safer. So, that's the video I have on youtube. Kinda boring but the G2 footage is awesome!

Thank you for posting the information, this will help the guys with the abilities to test their fuel system.

Another thing to do is look at your VST (Vapor Separator Tank, remove the starboard side color panel and you can see it) this one piece lower tank has No Low Fuel Warning.

VST pic.jpg VST no low fuel warning. One piece lower tank.

Or you will see a VSA (Vapor Separator Assembly) which has a low level warning system and will shut the engine down in case of a fuel restriction.

VSA pic.jpg VSA two piece lower tank has a low fuel switch which will shut engine down and warn you of fuel restrictions.

Bummer. I guess I have the VST without a low fuel warning.

Someone asked me about fuel line, so I thought I would post it here for everyone.

Part number 0772576. This is a 3/8" A1-15 USCG approved for below deck use.

Or just screw the hose into the fitting on the rear of the engine.

Never run a G2 on an old style gear case flusher!!!!

I recommend the correct rated fuel hose for the application, not the brand
