If I was to repower my 201 with new merc 4 stroke would the 250 be a good choice?

Humbled to be asked but I have zero knowledge of the new merc motor. I don’t give opinions on things I don’t know. I do know weight will be a factor the original champs were not built for all the stuff people want to hang on the transom

I repowered my 201 a few years ago with a G2 250 HO. It was a challenge. No one had done it before, so I was pretty much on my own with figuring it out. I did all of the rigging including fabricating a new dash and some other modifications to fit the new CSM controls and foot throttle. The setup got tricky but I finally got it dialed in by removing my jackplate and mounting the motor straight to the transom all the way up. It was worth the effort... it's bad ass 201.
No doubt you will face some challenges with the Merc but if you get it dialed in, that 250 HO will really wake up that boat. Good luck.

I'd start with a 25P Tempest or 24P Fury. You're in new territory with the 4 stroke and 201. I can only give a comparison of the 203 Hybrid hull.
currently running a 25 and 26 tempest 3 blade with 200 opti

Run those two and see how they do then.
My merc dealer says I'm only rated for 200 I told him my plate says any v6 he says new 250 is v8 so he won't put in on

Had this same thing happen to me with my 203. I had a new Coast Guard sticker printed that showed 250hp rather than "any V6" https://garzonstudio.com/boat/capacity-decal.html
I have a 250 SHO on my 1990. Runs well:) I believe the show is around 550 lbs. My old 200 was around 475, so the boat sits a little more bow high at rest than before, but runs extremely well.
I have been weighing the options as well. My current is a 1989 201 SCR with a 200 Mercury 2.4 Black Max...about 365# (according to NADA guides)...The 200 SHO is 505, 200 Mercury PRO XS is 505 (V8), 200 Mercury FourStroke is 475 and the 200 Mercury SeaPro is 483.
