    Toyota Tundras

Okay I want a slide in truck camper. Had one several years ago for a short time, but was unable to pull the boat with the F150 at the time. I would love a 3/4 ton, but I am already tight backing the boat in with a 2016 F150 crew cab, so a long wheel base is out. Dave Lefebre has a Phoenix slide in in his Tundra and pulls a 21' Ranger.

Anyone have any input on this? I am leaning towards the double cab version with the 6-1/2 bed, used with reasonable mileage.

    Thanks.

I'm running a 2017 Tundra TRD Pro, ARE topper and pulling a Bass Cat Lynx. I put airbags under to help with the load. Empty 16.8, loaded 11.5. The Phoenix campers are along the same lines as Four Wheel Camper, so weights should be about the same. I think my truck could run the basic shell model that's not loaded out on the inside, 850 pounds. The standard camper is 1100 pounds. I'm scared of what my mileage would be with the camper. I came out of 5 Cummins diesels and just got the Tundra this season, I always ran a big truck camper and got about 12 mpg loaded with the diesels, my 2015 was the first one I had reliability problems and endless recalls with. The Tundra is working to pull the Lynx in the hills, if I was going with a camper of any weight, I'd go diesel.

Thanks Mike. I had a 2013 Ram 2500, got rid of it after 2 years, to many problems.

I'm pulling a 20 foot center console now, but it is heavier then my Phoenix 721 was!

Max payload (depending on configuration) is 1620 on the Tundra. Quick search of a Pheonix slide in shows 1200 dry and 2000 wet.

I think Lefebre added a leaf to his. I need to dig around on YouTube and see what he did. I doubt it will happen anytime soon.

Eddie, Take a look at the Northstar pop-ups (northstarcampers.com). They show a TC650 on a Tundra. I have the Laredo SC and love the quality of these campers. They're a no-frills camper and built like a tank. Even non-Northstar owners talk about the outstanding customer service of Mr. Willett and his team. Good luck in your hunt and decision!

I second Northstar campers. I have a tc650 and it has worked out well. I spend about 25 nights a year in it. Get the 3/4 ton. I don't think the short beds would be any longer than a half ton. Regardless, the 7 foot Northstar 650 is going to be 7 feet long if it is in the half ton or 3/4 ton.
