Are you skin hooking it or just poking the point into the bait, what hook,line and rod ?
Line size and type to what rod/ reel gear ratio?

All else equal, a straight shank (NOT snelled in my opinion, but that's a different conversation) will increase hookups over an EWG. It'll also tear up baits faster and be more likely to foul, but that's the tradeoff.
Break their neck when you set the hook.
