    What amp breaker?

On a minn kota 80lb 24v the website says it draws 56amp. So go with a 50 or 60amp breaker?

The installation instructions for every 80# 24V motor states a 60A breaker.

Breaker size has nothing to do with current draw or motor type or voltage. What size wire do you have feeding the motor? Get the breaker for that wire size. If it is not big enough for the current draw of your motor. You need to upsize the wire.

I always use 6ga wire. Some plugs are 50amp and accept 6ga.

If you have 6ga wire, then go with the 60A breaker.

MinnKota site shows the min wire size required based on the lengh of wire run needed and model of trolling motor used.

They also cite your model of trolling motor requires a 60 amp breaker PERIOD........ Wire size tables are general and using the size of the wire that happens to might exist in the boat portion of the trolling motor circuit does not apply in this application.....use the factory recommended breaker size no matter how excessively large your existing wire size might be.

In every boat I've seen they all use 6ga. I cant understand why the wires coming from the trolling motor are 8ga.

Because such leads are an appropriate size. For fire risks, it is quite sufficiently safe. Its' length results in a negligible contribution to the overall voltage loss in the trolling motor's power wiring. The smaller gauge may as well offer costs, ease of installation and reliability benefits in some situations.

In 2008 I bought a Lund Explorer with a 24v Terrova 80. It was rigged with the typical 50 amp breaker which I tripped a couple of times. This was apparently a transitional period where the boat mfrs were not yet aware of the need to carry higher loads. Dealer questioned my request and thought I was a little "off" but humored me and no more issues.
