I am neither frugal or cheap. If it's a purchase that takes a large sum of money I'll think twice about it, everyday stuff no second thoughts. Now some days I ask myself why did you do that.

I try to do things that I can to save labor costs. Today I replaced the exterior trim around my dormer window because the builder in all his wisdom decided to use like and MDF for exterior trim. I also installed my fence, the stairs on my deck, patio and fire pit. I also do my oil changes etc. I do like nice things though so I end up spending the money on other things.

Most all of the clothes I wear casually came from the thrift shop. I usually buy the store brand of groceries and have had the same vehicle for 20 years.

On the other hand, I have an airplane. Frugal, thrifty or cheap does not belong in the same sentence as airplane ownership.

I dont kill myself to save a nickel. For example if it hot and humid the AC is going to run. I don't cut corners to save a few pennies either. I can live with in my means no matter how much I made. Those days meant more ground beef than steaks.

When I look over things trying to be cheap or frugal never saved me much in the long run. It usually meant more work and no fun. About the only thing that made sense was buying food and household products in bulk when we were younger.

Now the only thing I can really come up with about being frugal is cloths. Yeah I darn socks and wear shirts with so many holes it doesn't look like a shirt. I get my fair share of life out of my cloths and shoes.

It’s all relative really. I know some thrifty people that have a 600-800 per month alcohol and tobacco habit. Same guy calls me rich b/c I can afford a $550 truck payment....if only he knew I’m actually the thrifty one.

Most of my clothes come from Walmart and I get A LOT of mileage out of them. When it comes to shoes on my feet I get what my feet need and replace them as soon as they either start falling apart or hurting my feet. I work on finished concrete on my feet at work and it's looking like paying $100 for a pair of Merrills will be cheaper than paying $120 for two pairs of New Balance shoes to last me all year. I also use the higher end Dr. Scholl's insoles and Johnson's odor eaters because they work and are well worth the money spend for what they do for my feet.

For food I'm not hard to please but I refuse to sacrifice nutrition to save a dollar. I cringe when I hear someone say "I just had to buy *insert thing they can't afford* so gonna have to eat ramen for a while". Can't think of a food more terrible for you than ramen.

I bought a value bass boat brand new and it serves my needs fine. I plan on keeping it as long as I can then buying the last boat I ever own to replace it (probably the best I can afford at the time brand new too). For rods and reels I've learned that buying quality will be cheaper in the long run. When I buy lower end rods and reels I usually retire them early because they cheap price wasn't such a bargain after all because of poor performance. This goes with anything else when you get down to it. Pay up now to save money long term. I know people who will burn $20 worth of gas to get something $2 cheaper. Always wonder what's going through their mind when they do that. Yes those people I know that do that are broke all the time.

I'll reuse soft plastics until they basically fall apart. Now unproductive plastics that I try just because I'll toss after one use just to burn through them because they're taking up space that could be used for something else. I also can't make myself throw away a piece of something that might be able to be used for something down the line. Saved a lot of trips to the store by doing this!

I suggested to my wife a couple weeks ago that we not buy anything "new" for six months to save money. She quickly pointed out that we haven't bought anything new except fishing gear and a truck in past six months. I thought about it a few minutes and decided to find something to do in the basement. True story.

Here are ways I spend less than most people:
    1) Buy very few clothes. I only buy clothes to replace what I wear out. I have a lot clothes that are 10+ years old. It's nice that I have not changed my size since college.
    2) We limit how often we get carry-out. Never more than once a week. Usually 3 times or so a month. It is always upscale takeout like Chinese or pizza rather than McDonalds or Wendys. Carryout is a treat for our kids.
    3) I cut the cord and save about $70 a month compared to what we used to. Netflix and Amazon has plenty to watch.
    4) I ALWAYS bring a lunch to work. It amazes me how often my colleagues buy lunch.
    5) Going out to the movies is a treat for my kids. The last movie I saw for myself was 300.
    6) I hardly go see concerts or live sports anymore. I enjoy watching sports on my couch.
    7) Keep our AC at 78 and our furnace at 66.
    8) I make my coffee at home.

Now I definitely spend a lot on fishing gear, gas, and fishing trips and outings but my day-to-day spending is quite low compared to most people.

I also try to do most of my own vehicle maintenance and installation of equipment on my boat.

What other things do you guys do to be thrifty and or frugal to extend you money?

What's cheap about it and what does it matter if I'm on septic or not? Cheap would be not having water running to my house and having to pee outside among other things.
