    Upsizing, when most are downsizing!

I'm getting to the point in my life where it's time to think about retiring. I would love to have a really nice home on a lake. I realize that a lot of people, when they get in my age group maybe thinking about downsizing from a large house. I've never had one. What are some of the negatives associated with having a large home as you get up in age?

My perspective. Four bedroom with three full baths, two kitchens, two family rooms, one barn, one three story garage and 250 acres. Four hours to cut grass. House built in 1850. New roof last year but time for new windows and siding. Give me an apartment with a garage for the boat and I'm good.

I keep telling my wife the perfect house is on a lake...1,000 square foot living space on 1 floor.... 5 car garage.... boat house for 2 boats... big patio. She keeps shutting me down when I get to 5 car garage.

You definitely don't want to climb stairs when you're in your silver years. Save all that for the StairMaster at the local gym that you pay $60 a month for because the doctor said without exercise you're getting fat and you will have a heart attack LOL

I can’t wait to retire in 2 years. Sell the two rental houses and 3300 sq ft house we’re living in and downsize to a 1000-1400 sq ft A frame house on the lake. Big houses SUCK

Cleaning, maintenance, heating cost, cooling cost, insurance cost, taxes. The larger the house, the more that can go wrong. You want to make sure you own the house and that the house doesn't own you.

I recently downsized and it is a big adjustment but it is nice once that time has passed. The biggest adjustment is storage. We got rid of a lot of everything especially furniture. I was in a 5000 sqft house, 5/4.5 with basement, main and upstairs. It was great with kids and all but once they were gone, it was just too big. We were up in Cobb County in a very desirable neighborhood so we did not even have to list our house. It was sold by word of mouth. We ended up on West Point lake In a 2800sqft ranch 3/3 on the lake. I wish it had a bigger garage but everything else is great.

We built a 3700 sq. ft. (including bonus room) 3 bedroom, 3.5 bath home on about an acre in 1996. It had a 3 car garage, with one bay 30’ deep for my boat. We loved that house, but it was a lot of work maintaining that large a house and lot. 15 years later we moved to Kentucky Lake and downsized to an approx. 2000 sq. ft home with 3 bedrooms and 2.5 baths on just less than a 0.5 acre lot. Yes, downsizing is a PITA, but we have found that this sized home requires a lot less effort to maintain, even though it’s much older! Knowing what I know now, I’m not sure I’d ever go back to that large a home again.

Tell her you need space for your toys. Doesn't she have toys? Offer her a drawer or two.

I would recommend buying a smaller house with a large storage building or pole barn to store toys in. You will probably be much happier.
