Old Testament (NKJV)

The Book of Job
Chapter 24:1-25

"Since times are not hidden from the Almighty,
Why do those who know Him see not His days?

"Some remove landmarks;
They seize flocks violently and feed on them;

They drive away the donkey of the fatherless;
They take the widow's ox as a pledge.

They push the needy off the road;
All the poor of the land are forced to hide.

Indeed, like wild donkeys in the desert,
They go out to their work, searching for food.
The wilderness yields food for them and for their children.

They gather their fodder in the field
And glean in the vineyard of the wicked.

They spend the night naked, without clothing,
And have no covering in the cold.

They are wet with the showers of the mountains,
And huddle around the rock for want of shelter.

"Some snatch the fatherless from the breast,
And take a pledge from the poor.

They cause the poor to go naked, without clothing;
And they take away the sheaves from the hungry.

They press out oil within their walls,
And tread winepresses, yet suffer thirst.

The dying groan in the city,
And the souls of the wounded cry out;
Yet God does not charge them with wrong.

"There are those who rebel against the light;
They do not know its ways Nor abide in its paths.

The murderer rises with the light;
He kills the poor and needy;
And in the night he is like a thief.

The eye of the adulterer waits for the twilight,
Saying, 'No eye will see me';
And he disguises his face.

In the dark they break into houses
Which they marked for themselves in the daytime;
They do not know the light.

For the morning is the same to them as the shadow of death;
If someone recognizes them,
They are in the terrors of the shadow of death.

"They should be swift on the face of the waters,
Their portion should be cursed in the earth,
So that no one would turn into the way of their vineyards.

As drought and heat consume the snow waters,
So the grave consumes those who have sinned.

The womb should forget him,
The worm should feed sweetly on him;
He should be remembered no more,
And wickedness should be broken like a tree.

For he preys on the barren who do not bear,
And does no good for the widow.

"But God draws the mighty away with His power;
He rises up, but no man is sure of life.

He gives them security, and they rely on it;
Yet His eyes are on their ways.

They are exalted for a little while,
Then they are gone.
They are brought low;
They are taken out of the way like all others;
They dry out like the heads of grain.

"Now if it is not so, who will prove me a liar,
And make my speech worth nothing?"

The Gospel According to John
Chapter 6:41-60-71

The Jews then complained about Him, because He said, "I am the bread which came down from heaven." And they said, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that He says, 'I have come down from heaven'?" Jesus therefore answered and said to them, "Do not murmur among yourselves. No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, 'And they shall all be taught by God.' Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me. Not that anyone has seen the Father, except He who is from God; He has seen the Father. Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life. I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world." The Jews therefore quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?" Then Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. This is the bread which came down from heaven--not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever." These things He said in the synagogue as He taught in Capernaum.

Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, "This is a hard saying; who can understand it?" When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples complained about this, He said to them, "Does this offend you? What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before? It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. But there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him. And He said, "Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father." From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. Then Jesus said to the twelve, "Do you also want to go away?" But Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus answered them, "Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?" He spoke of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, for it was he who would betray Him, being one of the twelve.
