OK guys and gals, so I removed the lower unit to replace the impeller when I removed it I did it in forward gear. when I was in there I replaced the spedo tude and must have bumped the shift shaft and now it in neutral. so mt thought is to put the shifter into neutral and try sliding the lower unit on to see if that shaft will slide back in, is this correct

Should work, you may have to turn the flywheel or bump the starter to line the driveshaft up
with the crankcase. But many do it this way.

Make sure the key is off, lanyard off, and plug wires disconnected before attempting to turn the flywheel.

Neutral should work fine as long as you get everything lined up.
