Coast Guard sticker vs boat sticker?

Never paid much attention till I had to replace my coast guard sticker but my boat decal says it’s a 201 pro elite but my rating sticker says it’s a 201 pro xl. So what’s up with that? I replaced with same sticker. What I’m trying to do is reclassify my boat so I can put a 250 on the back of it. Sticker calls for a 245 so to me it’s worth a shot. Here’s me hin: Bnz1t205a898 I’ve looked up what I could but I’m looking for what that number is compared to the boat I actually have. If the xl and PE is the same thing then why not label it the same. If the sticker is wrong from factory then I need to know what I got so I can fix. I know there’s some goo roo’s on here that can break it down so thanks in advance.

What year is it? Is it a 2000 model? If it is rated for a 245 per the sticker that is what you can go up to. Stratos Boats are no longer manufactured. Do what ever you want but I would not exceed max hp. rating. If something happens and if it is your fault you could loose lots of money fighting a ambulance chaser-lawyer...

I know the history of the company and all the concerns involved. That’s the entire reason I’m trying to reclassify it. But if I have a rating sticker stating my boat is a 201 xl and the decal on the side says 201 pro elite why isn’t it the same. It’s a 98 model.

Here's the short of it. The manufacturer can put a sticker on that rated your hull for a 150 if they wanted..... a matter of what they woulda covered under hull warranty. They just couldn't rate it higher than coast guard formula rating.

You can "legally" hang whatever hp you want so long as it doesn't surpass cc formula.

Flipside to that is, you do that and its over the manf assigned hp and you find yourself in a watercraft mishap where somebody sics a lawsuit on ya, they could make an issue of it that could cost ya. And they ain't gonna take your new n improved sticker's word for it when there's money to be had.

    Just something to ponder.

I know a 245 is a stupid number...same on mine. While it does limit potential options, I don't dwell on it.

Later 201s were rated for 250. 5hp is not making one iota difference. It is a 20’ bass boat. Get the new sticker with 250. No one will ever know.

I guess I’m not making my question clear. Completely forget anything about a motor and lawsuits and all that bs. I appreciate everyone’s concern. FYI insurance will cover 5 hp over. But forget all that.

Once again I will ask the question nobody has answered yet. What’s the difference in a 201xl and a 201 pro elite. The boat decal says 201 PE and my rating sticker says it’s a 201 xl so why don’t they say the same?

Anything that is over 20’ in unrated by the CG. The manufacturer can put there recommendations on them. That’s where the insurance companies get involved.

245 was likely a unlimited rating back in 98. was a 250 even made for a bass boat back then?

I highly doubt it. But through my own research the boat I have is on a 201xl hull and has the bells and whistles so it’s got the “elite” package.

    I can find a Evinrude 250 w/20" shaft starting in '91.

The reason the stickers are different is they probably ran out of one or the other so they stuck whichever stickers they had at the time of completion... My 200XL was the same, 200XL on the Coast Guard sticker, 200 ProXL on the sides of the boat... Dan
