    1980 purchase question.

I’m looking at picking up a 1980 this weekend, has a few upgrades like ultrex, hot foot, manual jack plate, pro trim. Dual console. Price is pretty good compared to every other 1980 I’ve looked at.

The one draw back is the engine. It has the regular Merc 150, not the proxs version. Is that a deal breaker? Am I missing out on a lot by not getting the proxs?

Short answer - no. We have sold several with the Mercury 150 L 4-stroke. It is a very good engine and I think you will be very pleased with it. (PS. It is still a 150 hp engine!)

Any of your customers report on speed with the regular 150? I see the g2 and pro xs getting 55 with tournament loads.

Somewhere, there is a thread about the regular 150 being faster than the Pro XS due to higher gearing. I can’t confirm and I have the ProXS, but the regular 4s would have been just fine with me. If they are offering you a deal, I’d take it.

I don't think there is much difference between the engine besides the programming of the ECM. Higher RMP. That can translate to a different prop or gear ratio to and performance. I looked up the specs on the Merc 115 Pro XS and non XS and that is all I found. I did not consult a Merc professional though. The cost difference on the 115 was only about $300.

I have a 1980cc which i think is the same hull as the 1980. I have the regular 150 Merc and with dual power poles and getting 57mph with more than 1/2 tank of gas.

Yes - mid 50's is a very realistic speed with the 150 L. There will not be a huge top end speed difference between the two.
