    Performance Propeller

Recently had Performance propeller do some work on my prop. Bravo 1 XS 27P. TM Gen 1 lower. They cleaned up some rough edges and added some cup. Now i cant turn it past 5900 and top speed is 67 mph!! I ran my 22SF to 81 with the 27p when i first got it with a light load. Now i have 5 batteries and two people running 67 WOT. Seems like a lot of slip to me. Usually can get 74-75 with this setup. Any suggestions? Should i dump this prop and buy a new 27p? Or possibly try a new XS 28p? I have a 26p trophy that will almost hit the limiter. Thats why replaced it with a 27p. I have not called PP to discuss yet. Not sure what they did to it that i cant turn it efficiently now.

Motor is 2012 Pro XS 250. Brand new lower unit Gen 1 TM.

I actually just called PP to discuss. They think it needs a little less cup and work to get some of the lift back. This may solve the issue. Any suggestions are still welcome.

Before I started throwing more money at props I would let them do what they thought needed to be done to that one before I did anything else....just my thoughts.

Send it back ..sent them a trophy several years back and when I got it back it was junk . Called them and they said send it back to them .turns out they mistakenly worked it for a ranger instead of a bullet like we had disguised .ran great after they corrected there mistake .they were great folks to deal with.

Too much cup will kill the prop. The Bravo's with +1.5" pitch have the same issue. (23.5", 25.5", 27.5", 29.5")
Send the prop to Mark Croxton. I"v never had PP work a prop to my satisfaction, even the P4's. Croxton usually gets it right the 1st time, including the PP props.

So John, What about the even .5 pitch Bravo's. I just 2 weeks ago ordered a new Bravo and found out they do all start at the pitch sizes you list and go on up at 31.5, 33.5 in 2 inch increments.
Then they get to the in between pitches by removing cup. I ordered a 30.5 pitch Bravo.
Supposed to get it tomorrow or Saturday.

I wouldn’t let anyone work a Bravo for me other than Croxton. He started the trend and has the knowledge to make her run.

All are OK except the +1.5" cup models. They kill speed. I contacted Mercury and their answer is they were made for flats boats for holeshot, not for speed. The response was in email and Don Weed was copied. I don't like how they advertize for bassboats but the +1.5" pitch doesn't work well on them.

What are +1.5 cup models? What does that mean? Is that props with a 1/2 pitch like 29.5" or something different?

The bravo one propeller is only cast in even pitch’s . All of the odd number pitch’s are done with taller cup. So 1.5 inch up is even more cup.

Actually, I called Mercury about 2 weeks ago to ask this exact question on what pitch sizes are the original Bravo one's cast in. Since I wanted to order a new Bravo in a higher pitch than 28 I needed/wanted to understand. The Bravo props are cast with the full cup as John J. described. The pitch sizes 23.5", 25.5", 27.5", 29.5", 31.5", 33.5", ect.
What exactly John means by +1.5 I do not fully understand.
All the props start with full cup and then the cup is removed to get all the in-between pitch sizes in .5 inch increments. They also told me when buying a new Bravo they will at no charge remove additional cup to fine tune for you to get what you want. (I am sure you would have to pays shipping both ways). They just can not add cup back since they are literally removing material to get rid of the cup as I understand it.
I was not told but I am assuming it has not always been this way. I purchased a 28 last year that has 28 cast into the barrel (does that mean it was cast as a 28? not sure?) The 30.5 I just got Friday is stamped. And it ran great on my XRS this weekend.
If a person buys a new 28 Bravo it will start as a 29.5 and then have cup removed to get to 28.
I am just sharing what I was told from Nick Peterson the Propeller Specialist at Merc Racing.

Question, can Croxton work a prop for a specific boat and motor without having the top speed, rpms, engine height etc ? I have a Bullet 21 SDC, 300 R with 1.60 Sportmaster, 27 and 28 Bravo XS 1, when loaded hole shot is bad on 28 and not much better on 27, top speed has been around 80 although I have really not had good conditions to see how fast the boat will run. it does not feel like it has much more that that.

Yes he can. Just put on the work order that your boat is a dual console 21XRS because he doesn't know all of the model numbers. Also put in the notes to call you and yall can discuss what you are wanting the prop to do for you.

They got my prop today. Probably wont get it back in time for the weekend. He was critical of some minor scuffs on the blade edge. Called it "damaged". Tough to prevent with high water recently and the ramps in rough condition lately. However, the prop didnt perform well at all when i first got it back. I will post how it does after the redo. Nice guy over at PP, but i am not sure he thinks my prop is worse than it was before. It actually ran better before i sent it in for repairs than it did after. IT was actually damaged prior to the work as the leading edges were beat up from a bottom collision.
